Breaking the fast with a date is a tradition shared across millions of Indian homes. Choosing which date is where it gets interesting.
Ajwa (Madinah)
Small, almost black and gently chewy, Ajwa has a prune-like depth and is the most cherished date for iftar and gifting to elders.
Medjool
Large, soft and caramel-sweet. Medjool is the showpiece date for hampers and stuffing with almonds or walnuts.
Kimia (Iran)
Semi-dry and dark with a melting texture. Kimia is a family favourite for daily iftar because it balances sweetness and price.
Zahidi
Firm, golden and less sweet — perfect for date-and-nut laddoos, chutneys and baking.
- Gifting: Ajwa or Medjool in a wooden box
- Daily iftar: Kimia
- Cooking: Zahidi
Store opened packs in the refrigerator in an airtight container; bring them to room temperature before serving for the best texture.
